The result of main interest is bulk flow. It is the volume of air that flows through the port in a given time. Expressed in cubic feet per minute or cubic meters per second/minute.

Valve lift can be expressed as an actual dimension in decimal inches or mm. It can also be specified as a ratio between a characteristic diameter and the lift L/D. Most often used is the valve head diameter. Normally engines have an L/D ratio from 0 up to a maximum of .35. For example a 1 inch diameter valve would be lifted a maximum of 0.350 inch. PMMA is often used as a light or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It is an economical alternative to polycarbonate (PC) when extreme strength is not necessary. It is often preferred because of its moderate properties, easy handling and processing, and low cost, but behaves in a brittle manner when loaded, especially under an impact force, and is prone to scratching compared to glass.

Recently, John Tromp added a new twist to the problem by asking on sci.math how to make the angles as acute as possible. For the eight-triangle solution, he found a placement of the vertices in which the maximum angle is only about 85 degrees, and asked if more triangles would achieve even better angles.

My own involvement with the problem began several years earlier, with my paper “Provably good mesh generation“. One of the ideas in that paper was to define certain “tiles” that could be placed on the squares of aquadtree, to form acute-angled triangulations.

Returning to Tromp’s question on achieving better angles, a result of Gerver implied that the square could be partitioned into 72-degree triangles, not necessarily meeting edge-to-edge. Could this 72-degree bound be achieved by a triangulation in which all triangles met edge to edge? One can’t do better than 72 degrees because (by some manipulations with Euler’s formula) any triangulated square has (1) a vertex along a square edge where only two triangles meet, (2) a square corner covered by only one triangle, or (3) an interior vertex where at most five triangles meet. Cases (1) and (2) give at best 90 degrees, and case (3) gives at best 72.
